Your iPhone 4 Cases Won’t Fit Your New iPhone 4S

by Ahmed Omar on October 11, 2011

So, we didn’t get the redesigned iPhone 5 that we’d all hoped for, but Apple did give us a somewhat a redesigned iPhone 4S. While the two phones are almost indistinguishable, Apple claims they redesigned the antenna system and if you look closely at the supplied pictures on Apple’s website you can see the difference, subtle as it is, it will make a major impact on high end cases.

You would think this also impacts the Bumper case by Apple, but they claim otherwise, ”Important note: iPhone 4 Bumpers are compatible only with iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. They will not work with any other iPhone model.”

The main, yet subtle design change in the two phones is easily identified when the two phones are put side by side. In order for Apple to redesign the antenna system, small changes in the button configuration had to be made, the two volume buttons and the mute switch have been shifted a few millimetres as you can see in the images below.

This gives us evidence to believe that it is identical to the Verizon iPhone 4 although this has not been confirmed. If you are picking up a case for your new iPhone 4S be careful and put the above into consideration, the last thing you want is an expensive case that doesn’t fit!

So, to everyone who thought Apple made no changes in the design this year’s iPhone, think again.

Just noticed this when my friend tried my iPhone 4 case on his 4s. It’s a Speck Pixelskin HD, it still worked (you could push the volume buttons and albeit *just* flip the mute switch). But yeah… so much for all the iPhone 4 accesories working with the 4s……. :/

iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 dimensions are the same. I bought my 4S today (Black) and it fits into my Lifeproof case fine. Btw this case is as precise (dimension wise) as they get. Now iPhone 4/4S (White) are also the same therefore the 4S (White) is obviously larger than the black i4.

How is that Lifeproof case, by the way? I’ve read rave reviews, but that headphone port plug seems iffy to me. If it weren’t for that, I’d be totally sold on getting one, but does it get in the way much? I would think it would be irritating having to take it in and out every time you want to listen to music on headphones or use the headset, or, having to leave that awkward cable on it all the time.

As for other cases, I can absolutely 100% confirm the the Otterbox Defender DOESN’T WORK WITH THE 4S. The ringer switch impacts part of the case’s plastic frame, at once making the case fit wrong and making the ringer switch useless.

The iPhone 4 bumpers are usable; the volume and lock buttons have to be pressed harder than before, and the ringer switch has to be carefully moved to make sure you actually do move it.

The case I’m using right now is the cheapest, off brand AT&T store gel-skin kind of case, the one with the large, continuous cutout for the ringer switch and volume buttons. If anyone could recommend a good case for the iPhone 4S where the ringer switch, which I use several times a day, isn’t affected, please let me know.
