Jailbreak iOS 6 on iPhone and iPod touch using Redsn0w

by Ahmed Omar on September 20, 2012

As usual, whenever Apple releases a new software update, iOS users start to ask for jailbreak. iOS 6 untethered jailbreak won’t be out before months, but tethered jailbreak for A4-based devices can be done using the current redsn0w version. Just follow the step-by-step guide below to get your iOS device tethered jailbroken.

Devices supported

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPod touch 4G

Notes

  • This is a tethered jailbreak which means you’ll need to connect your device and make a tethered boot every-time your device reboots.
  • Unlockers shouldn’t use this jailbreak

Jailbreak iOS 6

STEP 1: Download iOS 6 firmware IPSW for your device.

STEP 2: Download Redsn0w 0.9.13dev4 for Mac OS X or Windows.

STEP 3: Now extract the files and execute Redsn0w file. Select the Extras option from the main menu of the Redsn0w and point it to the downloaded IPSW file.

STEP 4: Finally get back to the main screen and select the Jailbreak option then follow the on-screen instructions to enter DFU mode and get your jailbreak ready.

Boot-tethered jailbreak iOS 6

As we told you, this is a tethered jailbreak for A4-based devices; so you’ll need to make a tethered boot to be able to open your device. This can be done by opening Redsn0w and clicking on Extras then on Just Boot and follow the on-screen instructions.

Install Cydia on iOS 6

Cydia currently doesn’t support iOS 6; so your jailbreak won’t install Cydia, it will only give you the ability to SSH your device. Using SSH method, you can install Cydia on your jailbroken iOS 6 device.

Open Terminal in OS X or any SSH program on Windows and type:

ssh root@<IP address of your device goes here>

It will ask you for the admin password now, write down alpine then type:

wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh

And.. congratulations! Your device will now reboot and you’ll get Cydia right on your home screen!

If you found this post useful, hopefully hit the +1 (recommend) button ⇉

I had no trouble jailbreaking. I am just unable to SSH to my iPhone 4 to install Cydia.

I rebooted the phone in TETHERED mode after the jailbreak.

I am on WiFi on my home network.

    My firewall/Antivirus is disabled.

I get an error which shows either connection times out or connection refused.

IP address and password is correct.

I am using Win 7 and have tried Putty and WinSCP.

    Need help..

    Need CYDIA desperately..

    Thanks in advance.

    if you are using windows…
before you try to install cydia, get itools.
connect your phone/ipod to you computer
open itools, go to advance and click on “open SSH tunnel”
then use either putty or other ssh program
after that follow the rest of the process

I was asking my self the same question too, maybe to some baseband i guess.

  • CJin

Has anyone tried to unlock a 3GS with baseband 06.15.00?

  • Libby

I did this and it all worked fine, but Cydia wont start up… just jumps me back to homescreen. I’ve tried ‘just boot’ing a few times with no luck. As far as I’m aware everything worked like clockwork during the jailbreak… maybe just wait a few weeks for updates? Unless anyone can think of a solution.

Humm good news.. Waiting for the ipad 2 now :)

  • DarthDraz

So you need the beta IPSW to do the Jailbreak. Going to download and try.

  • DarthDraz

SSH into my phone works. type in the ssh termail what i need to. but Cydia does not install on my I4. Jailbreak was successful.

  • SUPERKILLER2000

Can someone put up a guide how to do this, from the very beginning. I’ve never done something like this before.
    thanks :D
