Guys, read the instructions more carefully.

STEP 4: Open Redsn0w and select “Extras” then “Select IPSW” and browse for the iOS 5.0 IPSW file

The instruction is telling you to restore/update your iPhone to iOS 5.0.1 and then in redsn0w you select iOS 5.0 IPSW.

When I try to download Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 it just gives me a zip file. I have an iphone 4 GSM with 5.0.1. It seems to be confusing in trying to hit the download button and all the ads here. Help!

Guys, do what the article says to do. EXACTLY.
Download Redsn0w 0.9.9b8
Download the correct iOS 5.0 (Not 5.0.1) for your device
Click Extras
Click Select IPSW
Choose iOS 5.0
Go back and click Jailbreak
It should show a loading screen with something like “Loading Jailbreak Data”

The process was peformed as mentioned but cydia logo is white and wont run. I have redone the procedure a number of times still no change.

My phone keeps rebooting itself right after jailbreak and i cant turn it off. iTunes wont detect the phone! I’ve tried RecBoot, tinyumbrella-5.00.12a, redo the jailbreak process, it still the same, keeps rebooting!!

Have redsn0w ready to “just boot” and when it tells u to turn Off ur idevice hold both power and home buttons and then while still holding it will turn off but keep holding the buttons then click “next” to follow instructions, but still hold the button down. When it says hold power button for three seconds let go of the home button and still hold the power button for 3 secs. Then follow the next steps and it will boot tethered mode. Ur back!

My jailbreak stoped working, of course, but i can’t do it again. I have no shsh backup and when i download the ios 5.0 for downgrade, the zip file doesn’t contain any file *.ispw
redsnow didn’t work because e didn’t recognize the ios 5.0.1 download with itunes.
Anybody can help?

I just updated to 5.0.1, selected 5.0 in redsnow, click jailbreak but then exploit failed? whats that. Up to now that had never been happened

you need to go to cydia and add some sources for you to have signal.

just rename the .zip to ipsw.

exploit mean it didnt get or detect your selected 5.0.

Comments like these that scare most of the avg users to stay away from jailbreaks.

I updated from 4.3.3 to ios5.0.1 on itunes, then I tried to use the redsn0w to jailbreak it, it got all the way to the pineapple screen and it loaded everything. It did not reboot though, it stopped after the apple screen and that’s it. So now I can’t even get to the white cydia icon! What i do wrong?

Sounds like you need to enter into DFU mode to boot…

for all those newbies out there if you upgraded to 5.0.1 firmware unintentionally, Ths is what I did to keep all my data intact:

1. Downloaded sn0breeze (lastest version)
2. Created a custom 5.0.1 firmware
3. Restore my iphone to that custom IPSW through itunes.
4. Restore my iphone to my lastest backup through itunes.
5. Used redsn0w POINTING TO A 5.0 IPSW to boot-up.
BINGO!

Do All the Steps..
But when you get Cydia on your ipod (white).
Press Cancel on the Redsn0w..
Then open it up again (redsnow) then select IPSW 5.0 NOT 5.0.1
Then it will reboot.
And it won’t give you the unrecognized build Shitaki.

I have followed all these steps and successfully jailbroken my iPhone4. After the JB, used jus boot and all apps are working fine. But only issue i could find is, the cydia, semitether and installous icons are showing white colour instead of normal icons. But all of theses are working fine. Did couple of re-boots and Just boot and even jailbreak. Still issue continues … any one can through some light on this issue ???

This is exactly what happened on my iphone 4. I used the redsnow 9b8 vesion and the ios 5.0 ipsw, it gets through it, but Cydia icon is white. Is there a 5.01 ipsw that does not give out the error this ipsw file is not supported? Gotta be a simpler way.

This clearly does not work – it loads cydia but yuo can not boot tethered on an ipad 1 so no functionallity. It does not recognize 5.0.1 on the just boot option… hopfully we will address this soon it has been over a week

I had the same issue on my iPad1 3G. To fix the issue I connected with iTunes and did a sync. The icons have come back again and are in full color

Point redsnow to iOS 5 … NOT … iOS 5.0.1 (read the instructions word for word, letter for letter)
It works fine. Upgrade using iTunes to 5.0.1, use redsnow to boot and point to old 5.0

What for? You want your device to be on 5.0.1.
Go download 5.0 for your device from the web (google is your friend)
Run redsn0w and point to the 5.0 ipsw. It’s not changing your phone back to 5.0 but rather using the loopholes of 5.0 to trick your 5.0.1 (layman’s terms) in to booting jailbroken.

you dont point it to the 5.0.1 ipsw, you point it to the older 5.0 ipsw just to use its loopholes to boot.

If everyone does what Trent wrote they will work fine.

YES you need the ipsw of the older 5.0
YES your phone/iDevice is on 5.0.1 (and wont downgrade)
YES you need to use redsn0w and point to the older 5.0 (to use its loopholes)

you need to run redsnow again and choose the enable tethered ipod button (ot whatever it is) instead of install cydia. then just follow the steps again

EVERYONE has missed an important part here. I stumbled upon it. Do this

Redsnow 9.9b8
Make sure you are on 5.0.1
Download 5.0 (previous verison)
Run redsnow but specify the 5.0 version not a 5.0.1 (yes even though you are on 5.0.1)
Jailbreak as per instruction
When finished
again specify 5.0
Just boot option
BUT SOFT RESET WHEN IT SAYs WAITING FOR RE BOOT!!! I have not seen this anywhere and mine kept crashing or just didnt work!!! When you do that you see the pine apple instead of the apple and all works fine!!!

I got an iPhone 4 and have followed all the steps very carefully. My Cydia icon looks fine. However, I am having problem loading it.
After I click on it, the app would show loading and then close itself. In addition to that the biggest problem that I am having is that my phone shows “No Service” no matter if I use my own SIM card or a Gevey SIM. Can anyone help me out here?

Ok mr. Hbarnie, I had the same problem. Which was a white Cydia after reload. After the jailbreak during the reboot there was NO pineapple but the well known apple picture. This might be the cause for the white Cydia. What helped for me was:

After the jailbreak and the white Cydia:

1. Shut down iphone.
2. Go to FDU.
3. Start Redsnow 0.9.9b8.
4. SELECT IPSW 5.0 again.
5. Choose just rebood.

There the pineapple was again. Now Cydia is in normal state and will start to install some files if you run it for the first time.

use snowbreeze its easier… i had same problem trying redsnow and snowbreeze worked right away

ok so i have a iphone 3gs running ISO 5.0.1 . I successfully jailbreak AND UNLOCK the phone with redsn0w. At the time i did this the phone had a At&T sim card ( didn’t know, just bought the phone used). Once i opened cydia after reboot and the system files were downloaded i can’t find the icon for cydia and my phone and message icons are not there either. Help plz

This worked to fix my “unrecognized build” issue. Not only do you have to got to Extras to specify the firmware 5.0 (NOT 5.0.1) during the jailbreak, but you have to then go back and do it AGAIN (select the firmware) just prior to the “Just Boot”. This extra step of RE-SELECTING the firmware AGAIN after the jailbreak is not listed in ANY of the instructions I’ve found anywhere and is not listed above. Perhaps some people are able to tether boot without reselcting the firmware a second time (once prior to jailbreak and once again prior to “Just Boot”) but that did not work for me.

If any of u cant ‘Just boot’ properly, check the IPSW u selected. Even tho it ish 5.0, there are the build to consider. Go to the settings menu on ur iPhone, select ‘General’ than select ‘About’. Check the version. It should show either ’5.0.1(9A405)’ or ’5.0.1(9A4334)’ the (_____) shows the build. Make sure the IPSW u selected matches ur iPhone’s version. Hope this helps

All of my jailbreak icons are white (myfi, sbsettings) with the exception of cydia. anyone else having this issue. Also MyFi doesnt seem to work with 5.0.1 build. wifi hotspot is broken

I also had the same problem with unrecognize build over and over again, even after following step 5 and 6. I found out that after agaon download a new 5.0 build it recognized and now jailbreaked again. After installing winterboard I had to reboot and all problem began, but after fresh download 5.0, pointed out in step 5.. it worked!!

I spent about 8 hours last night following all instructions clearly, I was able to jailbreak my husbands newer 3gs running 5.0.1 using redsn0w. i ran ultrasnow to unlock the phone through cydia and am now getting “no service”. I researched many websites before making the decision as to the best method, it was buggy and I had to make about 3 attempts before I finally got it jailbroken. Only to discover when i read the cydia blog on my now jailbroken phone, that if you flash the ipad baseband on a newer 3gs “you may KILL the cellular radio rendering the iPhone useless forever.”!!! Someone please tell me that is not true and there is a way to unlock the 3gs on 5.0.1.

Ultrasn0w still doesn’t unlock under 5.0.1, whatever BB you have. You will need to wait until Ultrasn0w be compatible with 5.0.1.
I should advise you to go to BB 6.15 only if you are in BB that Ultrasn0w is incompatible.
UPGRADING TO 6.15 BB WILL NOT MAKE ULTRASN0W WORK UNDER 5.0.1!!! BE WARNED ABOUT IT!

you have to choose “iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore” IPSW to unable you jailbreaking your device, but be aware that this jailbreak is tethered, so we are waiting for the untethered jailbreak for the ios 5.0.1 .

use redsn0w, select 5.0 IPSW, when you go to jailbreak, uncheck install cydia and check install baseband and deactivate

FINALY i figured out how to get rid of the unrecognized build problem. hehe i tried jailbreaking it and followed the steps above about 20 times untill i got it i hope this wont mess up my iphone anyway before the last step before just boot u HAVE TO select ipsw again then just boot and it will work.

You have to choose “iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore” ( i’m talking at redsn0w – select IPSW )then you’ll be able to jailbreak your device, but be aware that this jailbreak is TETHERD ( it means that you have to connect your device to your PC everytime you switch it off to boot it again).

hi anad back it up and go into computer your account then itunes and somewhee will be a folder which i forgot what its called find that and move it to ur desktop finally find the ipsw on ur desktop and ur done if ur done and cydia pops up as a blank icon on ur idevice ur gonna have to retether it and then ur done if this helps then ur done, if not follow a youtube video

I did everything exactly right on this. Then I go to reboot and it says the reboot is done and I see the pineapple and everything. But then after the pineapple it just keeps going back and forth between the apple logo and the loading screen…instead of actually rebooting like it should be. ANY WAY TO EXPLAIN THIS???!!

I’ve jailbreaked my iPhone 3gs with redsn0w it worked fine until I actually got into it. I get the “no service” thing. So I downloaded ultrasn0w in hoping that would solve it. But it didnt, so now I’m not sure what to do. I have a supported baseband according to ultrasn0w.. but it isnt unlocking… What can I do so fix this?

I had to reboot PC after initial jailbreak, re-select 5.0 ipsw (not 5.0.1 ipsw), then “just boot” and works as usual. Follow directions in thread and should work.

Also, If you are having problems, it never hurts to try another USB port. For whatever reason, I have problems when working off of my USB 3.0 ports, possibly a driver issue, but all the same, thought it was worth mentioning.

It is worth repeating that if possible avoid upgrading to 5.0.1 , It is much more of a hassle to even simply “just boot” redsnow requires that the ipsw be re-selected every time a “just boot” is desired. Just a thought.

i did 5.0.1 on 3gs. its amazing new stuff.really cute. did jailbreak after working on it for a season. It was very hard even to do that “Just Boot”. It wasn’t just boot. I actually needed to master some street techniques to do that somehow. now only one prob remains- how to get it working with local mobile carriers? Anybody? Somebody?

So far iBooks doesn’t work for me on semi-tethered jailbreak. However, when normal booting the iPAD it work just fine.

Installed the latest version 5.0.1 on a 3GS. Selected the 5.0 IPSW on redsnow 9.9b8. Clicked on the jailbreak button. When I had put the iphone in DFU mode it said: “The connected device doesn’t support unthethered options”. How can I fix this.

yes it happened to me too, its easy, all you have to do is: when trying to boot tethered, you MUST “select ipsw” again and browse for the ipsw 5.0 you already used when Jbreaking,then go back and boot tethered…and you’re there:)

After the jailbreak is finished, you have to go back to Select ISPW and choose your file. Then you can go to Just Boot and it should work. Took me awhile to figure that out.

Ok Guys im gonna clear things up here..

1. When you download the firmware, download 5.0 firmware, not 5.0.1!!!
use that fimware on your redsn0w jailbreak…

Tether/semi-tethered/untethered : As cydia grows, the apps, tweaks, and downloads of cydia rarely require rebooting now..you’ll get 1 in 15 apps or updates or any cydia item that you will need a reboot for.

I never turn off my phone and alot of people dont either so tethered jailbreak is just fine for me.

on the other hand though, people just dont want to lose the call and msg functions of their iphone if it turns off on a tethered jailbreak so download the semi tether when your in cydia..

The UNtethered jailbreak will NEVER COME…it hasnt come since 4.3.3

So for the record: 4.3.4 – no untethered ever released, 4.3.5 – no untethered ever released, 5.0.0 – no untethered ever released, 5.0.1(my firmware) – no untethered will be released…

why?? why you ask?

Simple – Apple are releasing updates faster than chronic dev can handle..they’ve started on 5.0.0 and havent gotten close and we’re on 5.0.1 a month after 5.0.0 release.

For every .1 update means hundreds more code writing for the chronic dev(who do this in their spare time)

So forget untethered…its gone for good…either accept semi tether or dont jailbreak at all.

Try installing the 5.0.1 ipsw in itunes by pressing option while clicking on “restore” then after you’ve restored it use the 5.0 ipsw in redsnow, remember to use it both for the jailbreak and for the boot up, otherwise the cydia icon will probably be white and crash. Hope this helps, cheers.

Is the file you downloaded renamed correctly? When I download those ispw files they come as a “.rar” file. All you have to do is make sure that you are showing your extensions in windows explorer and then rename the file to have the extension of “.ispw” and you should be good.

My ipod is dead now… I did everything correctly… jailbroke fine, cydia reloaded fine, then when I downloaded a cydia app (Categories, which I love) it restarted my ipod before I got the chance to tether boot it. Needless to say I got the apple forever. Put it in DFU, rebooted it and redsn0w crashed after first stage. My ipod is completely black and unresponsive. Now, no matter how many times I switch ports, unplug, restart my computer, I get an error in redsn0w or a usb communication error. If I restart and switch usb ports I can get to the same stage, and it crashes. I’m running out of ports!! Help!

the only way to fix ur iphone or ipad its downgrade it, cuz even if u got a way to install ios 5.0.1 theres no way to unlock it, ultrasnow and gevey simcards dont work. i dont know why but im sure of it. And redsnow 0.9.9b8 works only with a ipsw ios 5.0_9A334 it doesnt work with ipsw 5.0.1. sorry i dont speak englis, i hope this info help u.

Finally doing nothing to My iPad 2 Wifi and iPod Touch 4G as it is just waste of time to upgrade 5.0.1 from 4.3.5 or trying to downgrade it. I am searching and reading hours and hours abut the downgrades and upgrades to just having cydiya and installous but it feels like its still too early to get them JB, I suggest please dont mess with your gadgets and wait a couple of weeks more.

This guide is NOT correct, IOS5.0.1 is NOT supported for tethered JB on Redsn0w 0.9.9b8.

To have this working you have to point to IOS5 in extras and then it will be recognized and working.

I hope these tech writers stop copying from one another and test and confirm what they post before posting and causing trouble to people.

Another recommendation: DO NOT install SEMI-Tethered, it crashes your device, stay tethered and just do not reboot, you will be good.

Point it to IOS5 instead of IOS5.0.1, and it will work.

Hold down both buttons (power & home) until you hear the Windows “disconnected hardware” sound out of your PC speakers. If you hear it, or you get a notification that hardware was disconnected etc, you did it right. All you have to do now is just plug it into your computer and it should turn on.

So in summary:

Hold down power+home until device ‘boots out’ of DFU mode, it should still be on a black screen now, if not, it would be on the Apple logo.

Reboot it again if it gets too far in the boot stage (most likely by now it already is)
Hold down home+power again and this time when you first see the Apple logo hold down the Home button, now, it should be in recovery mode. Try Exit Recovery or ‘Recovery Fix’ on Redsn0w first, if that doesn’t help, restore from recovery mode. 5.0.1 isn’t going anywhere soon until the ‘delays’ are killed. Annoying.

Pretty strange in my opinion. I’ve tried this several times using iOS 5.0 ipsw, still keeps saying such like ‘Unrecognized build’ and such.

I even tried ‘Ac1dsn0w’ but that didn’t do much either. No cydia icon.
I even waited it out after the apparent ‘spinning logo loop’ (on the bottom of the screen) But soon afterwards, I went to sleep leaving the device on and the same with the computer I was testing it on.

The last bit I believe I got was something like “Device has entered recovery mode , Device has exited recovery mode , Device has entered DFU mode , Device has exited DFU mode, Device (null) has been disconnected (null).”

Wow, sorry, it’s nothing, in my opinion I just think that’s kind of stupid, but of course I don’t think it’s really necessary, I’m guessing just a step for people that are jb’ing it for their first time (on iOS 5.0.1 that is)

for your IPSW file, it will be downloaded as a zip file. Do not unzip but rename the file to .ipsw…..thats all you need, should be able to find it.

I used the instructions above last night and had no problems jailbreaking my phone in less than an hour. The semi tether has worked ok, as well. Following the photo illustrations should be enough to get your iphone tethered or semi tethered. (I have iPhone 3GS new bootrom with software iOS 5.0

I jailbroke my Iphone 4 on Monday night and when I rebooted the phone bricked. After an hour I was finally able to restore my phone thru redsn0w and phone worked great on Tuesday. Tuesday night installed a few more apps and had to reboot. Phone bricked again and now the same procedure that restore the phone Monday would not work last night. The firmware is recognized and when I attempt to jb the program loads to stage 1 and then encounters an error. Any ideas how to unbrick?

Again specify the ispw file to ispw5 and try rebooting again. If it doesnt show u the pineapple its not booting in jailbroken mode due to which cydia wont open. I had the same issue too.

yes use the semi-tether because without it for any reason your phone would shutoff or have to shut off and your not home at a computer your phone will not turn back on

Read somewhere that you can try to restore from iTunes using another computer. Did that last night on my wife’s laptop and fully restored my phone to original settings.

when i try to select the ipse file i downloaded from above redsn0w simply says it does not support this? what else can i do!

If you have the white cydia icon problem, reboot, if it’s still white run the jailbreak again… just worked for me.

why is everyone’s suggestion to “reboot it”? Like alex, I did everything exactly correct. All that happens is when I do the “just boot” option, I get the pineapple logo, then it SWITCHES to the white apple logo and repeatedly tries to reboot itself over and over again, until i do a hard reset.

NOOO, do not follow the procedure above. When you are using an old OS like 4.3.3 its much simpeler. Just install redsnow 9.9b8. Click on jailbreak and do a boot. You don’t need to download the ISPW files and don’t need to select the I.O.S. 5.0 ISPW file.

also, I downloaded the latest 5.0.1 (1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore ipsw) from this site and redsn0w_win_0.9.9b8 does not recognise it. I could only do a jailbreak with the 5.0 (1_5.0_9A334_Restore ipsw) on my ipod touch 3rd generation

exact error message is “That IPSW is not supported by this version of redsn0w”

In order to try to simply get a working un-tethered version, I tried 1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore ipsw with redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc19 and it failed miserably everytime.

The link to the earlier versions of redsnow don’t seem to work on their site

Personally I can’t believe how people blame the dev-team over nothing.
People who have trouble jailbreaking now should realize they haven’t

hi im running 4.3.5 and BB 04.10.01 using a Gevey Sim card to unlock… have tried using Sn0wbreeze and Redsn0w to upgrade to iso5 and keep my BB of 04.10… but I keep getting error 3194 in itunes.. i already have a tethered jail break on the phone and always reboot using 4.3.4.

something really weird happened, i successfully jailbroke my iPod, i tapped on Cydia, it loaded it but then it went to home screen and some of my apps were deleted, and half of them on the first screen. please help?

I had the same problem, you need to select 5.0 firmware, not 5.0.1, and now you can jailbreak your iphone as usual!

had the same problem. make sure you selected ipsw before choosing “just boot” and then when ur on the 3rd step of DFU mode make sure to hold down the home button longer than it asks. then it will go pass “exploiting with limera1n”. hope that helped

To anyone having the white Cydia issue. After you have ran the Jailbreak, Turn off your phone and open up redsnow again. Go to extras and click “Just boot” and follow the directions again like you did when you were initially running the jailbreak (Hold power button, then home, then release power. etc).

Worked for me and I got cydia now.

Ok one thing people need to remember, before you do the “Just Boot” stage, you need to Select your IPSW 5.0 AGAIN, otherwise you’ll just end up with a White Cydia. Hope this helps.

How do you do this jailbreak? When I do this for my ipod touch 4g its in iOS 5.0.1 and I get an error with the RedSn0w saying an error. When I look for my firmware I find it and all but it says the firmware but then says restore.ipsw and when I click on it thats when I get the error saying it cant do it etc. I need help. Someone please help me with this.

if your using an iphone 4 running 5.0.1 on a windows computer sn0wbreeze is waaayyyy easier

this is what i did on my iphone 4 running 5.0.1 on windows xp..

Step 1: download sn0wbreeze, your ios 5.0.1 ispw file, and save it all to your desktop to make it easier to find it all.

Step 2:Once you’ve downloaded your IPSW for iOS 5.0.1, run Sn0wbreeze. Click the blue arrow. Find the downloaded IPSW file your IOS device or simply drag the ispw file to the box and click on the blue arrow again.

Step 3: Sn0wbreeze will now show the details of your device to a verification screen. Click the blue arrow again.

Step 4: Now, if you are planning to preserve the baseband of your iPhone to unlock the SIM Gevey Ultrasn0w unlock, choose Expert Mode option. Then click the arrow again.

Step 5: In the next screen, select Build IPSW and click on the blue arrow again. This step may take a while, but you will be notified when the process ends.(i think you can even play pacman while you wait..it might take awhile but just be patient and play pacman to help ease your mind while you wait)

Step 6: Connect the device and click OK, then follow the steps to slide the device in DFU mode. If all goes as planned, you will receive a confirmation message.

Step 7: Open iTunes, select the device in the list, then hold down the left Shift key on the keyboard, press the Restore button, which lets you navigate to the custom firmware file that you created through Sn0wbreeze.

With the process completed, you now need to know how to boot tethered.

Step 1: Start iBooty, which by default should be on your desktop, select the device and press Start.
Step 2: Follow the onscreen instructions to insert the device into DFU mode.
Step 3: Finally iBooty do its job. Now you can go to Cydia and install all your favorite applications and settings!
Before concluding, it is also worth noting that the patch also works on iOS 5.0.1 SemiTether

this way seems a little techy but its actually super easy i promise…i use this way because of all the errors i got with redsn0w and plus i even get to play pacman while i wait!! : ) like if this helped you

btw this method should work with iphone 4, 3gs, ipods, and even ipad. just make sure u use ur ispw and also feel free to google sn0wbreeze and double check the instructions to make sure this is right for you

Do everything as the instructions say, except instead of using the 5.0.1 IPSW download the 5.0 IPSW and import that to Redsn0w and it should say the file it detected and then warn you thats the file its going to use from then on after you imported that follow the threads instructions to the letter! Well its the same as your IOS it will be one of 4, 4.3.5, 5.0, 5.0.1, dont hold me too it tho like i said before in a different post im new to this stuff but im over 70% sure thats correct to find out what iOS your running simply go to Settings > General > Version, and thats the iOS software! Yes I let it run all night and it still was spinning the next morning. Ive tried the recovery fix on redsnow too and it didnt workeither. would really appreciate any help on this or even just how to get it back to normal now.

I have a question I have a iphone 4 5.01 did the semi tether using these instrucions. Everything was fine then I had to reboot due to a sync issue with iTunes. I did the semit tether instruction but to no avail. I was stuck in devo mode for over a hour. Now im back up semi tetherd still where everythgin works except safari, stock email, and youtube. What can I do o get back to ether fulltethered or stock. I don’t have the blobs due to the computer crashd.

try to reset all settings on your iPhone first, then try restoring it.

Use the ios 5.0 NOT 5.1 – in resdn0w. Even though your iphone is on 5.1

i.e.

update your phone to 5.1 through itunes. download the custom ispw for 5.0 and select that with redsnow. then jaoilbreak

go back to redsnow and select ipsw then “just boot tethered” – all will work until your phone gets reset again.

Each time you need to reboot you must go to computer. the semi tethered is a “limp mode” to get you home.

Don’t flash the iPad baseband on it because Ultrasn0w is not updated for 5.0.1 yet!!!

I need some help. I wouldn’t classify myself as an “expert” or anything, but I have jailbroken and unlocked 3 iPhones, 2 iTouches, and an iPad (v1) – so I am somewhat familiar with the process…. The 3 iPhones that are unlocked are 3GS’ running iOS 5.0 (9A334) with BB 06.15.00. They are all the new bootrom (359.3.2) and as such are “tethered” jailbreaks. We have T-mobile service and as stated, all work fine. I bought a “used” un-jailbroken 3GS for my daughter (for Christmas) that had been updated to 5.0.1 and I went through the processes with both Redsn0w (0.9.9b8) as well as sn0wbreeze v2.8b11 (with iBooty) and successfully jailbroke (have Cydia) and upgraded the BB to 06.15.00. However my issue is that – even after installing (multiple times) ultrasn0w, the phone still does not recognize the SIM. I get an “invalid SIM” error when I put in the T-mobile SIM and then it states “no service” in the upper left hand corner. I have turned off 3G and locations services – but no joy. Still keep getting the error.

Can anyone help? PLEASE?

I actually found a way to work this out and am happy to say it works great. So for any of you that may be having the same issue I was having – here is what you do:

go to hxxp://www.mediafire.com/?j33mjhh0wh10i3t and download the following file to your PC: Fix ultrasn0w for iOS 5.0.1 (3GS).deb
Sign up for a DropBox account if you don’t already have one and place the file in the DB account
On your iPhone – in Cydia – search for, find, and download the program “iFile”
On your iPhone – in the App Store – search for, find, and download the App for “DropBox”
Set your DropBox (“DB”) App on your iPhone to link with the DB account you set up on your PC so you can see the .deb file you down loaded.
VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT have ultrasn0w installed! If you do, uninstall it
On your iphone, in your DB app, launch the “Fix ultrasn0w for iOS 5.0.1 (3GS).deb” file in iFile. (to launch in DB, pick the pick the “Open In” arrow/pompt in the bottom right hand corner and choose iFile).INSTALL the .deb file and then reboot your phone
Once you’ve rebooted, go into Cydia and install ultrasn0w 1.2.4

This should set you up. Only 6 1/2 hours of research and trial/error – but now it works!

I have tried to jailbreak from this page and have run into a couple of problems. When I download the iOS 5.0.1 final version, extract it, and there is no .ipsw file there. I have done this so many times, and I still can’t get it to work. My 3Gs New BootRom has official iOS 5.0.1 Installed. Directed redsn0w to iOS 5.0 and all installs ok the devise, however after when I use the Just Boot Option to boot into the Jailbroken state, I get error message Unrecognised Build, redsn0w is still pointing to iOS 5.0 and I don’t know what else to do. I have never had a problem in the past using redsn0w to jailbreak my iPhone 3Gs.

You can’t downgrade to iOS 5.0. What you do is download the IPSW file for 5.0 to your computer and select it in redsn0w. (Even though you have 5.0.1 on your phone)

Works fine…it’s semitether BUT the semitether only works maybe for about 3 to 5 hours the most then my phone reboots on it self and goes back to stock ios 5.0.1…..I get it to work again with the JUST BOOT on redsn0w…. But hate doing this method like two or three times a day….Any advice or update?????

You have to restore your iPhone back to factory settings using iTunes because it is in recovery mode…I know because it just happened to me.

as far as i know redsn0w 9.9b8 not support os 5.0.1ipsw yet but it does support 5.0ipsw

do Open Redsn0w and select “Extras” then “Select IPSW” and browse for the iOS 5.0.0 IPSW again before apply step # 7 else same message ..” redsn0w not support …..”
it work for me on my 3gs os5.0.1 baseband 5.16.05Semi Untethered.
i’m happy with it for now… and wait for untethered jailbreak.

Do a Google search for iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw That is the correct 5.0. Version. It will download as a .zip file. DO NOT Extract it. Just change the .zip extension to .ipsw A window will pop up saying “If you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?” Click “Yes”. DO NOT Remove or replace the 5.0.1 .ipsw that’s is your itunes Apple Software Update file. Just point to where you have the 5.0. .ipsw file saved at. Worked like a charm for me!

I downloaded the official firmware 5.0.1 for GSM for iphone 4 , when i open it with redsn0w 0.9.9b8 , this message pop out : This ipsw is not supported by this version of reds0w . and a long fingerprint with a long serial . are you sure this works on 5.0.1 ?

I’ve had the same problem and none of the unlockers/jailbreaks will respond at least saying this is a known problem and what needs to be done (new code breaking/software development, etc.). So frustrating as I gave my son who lives in Germany my old AT&T 3gs and thought I was being proactive by updating it to the new iOS 5. Basically shot myself in the foot as he has a brick until someone responds what the issue is.

i am having the same problem as well, installed semi tether and when reboots it just hangs at the apple logo, i checked the semi tether app and it says device is protected, i also installed installous and appsync but removed both prior to downloading semi tether, is H1Siri the problem?

Tiny i read around a lil bit and found out it has something to do with the mobile substrate, which is not only downloaded by the BigBoss Semi-Tether repo but from the Cydia/Telesphoreo source as well

I’m Jailbreaking iPod 4G iOS 5.0.1 with Custom IPW 5.0. 9A334 although my firmware 9A405 (I tried to use the same Firmware 5.0.1but redsnow reject it said not compatible) and then, the jailbreak was success. the iPod reboot successfully without giving me any chance to do ‘Just Boot’ option. The Cydia icon appear with only white, can’t click, can’t tap. something wrong? is because im using diffrent IPSW or i’m missing some steps? Please help.. really confusing…

Question from a newbie: Probably a dumb question but if I jailbreak my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 using the semi-tethered option, can I restore and re-jaibreak using the un-tethered jailbreak when it becomes available (I need to be able to use my phone in a different part of the world on the weekend).

It automatically boots once and then you shut it off and go to extras and click the just boot option after that it should work

You dont have to worry about that now a new beta has been released for redsn0w so it will recognize ios5.0.1 with out having to manuelly select an ispw so just search redsn0w 0.9.9.b9 on your search engine and you should find after you visit a couple of sites because some of them just talk about the new redsn0w

Just search redsn0w 0.9.9.b9 and download it that will work because it recognizes ios 5.0.1 without having to manuelly selecting an ipsw making it much simpler this however is still a tethered jailbreak so u will have to boot it up using ur computer or else youll just see the apple logo

The jailbreak seemed to work but Cydia did not install correctly, tried it a couple of times with the same results. So I restored back to 5.0.1 I was using redsn0w_win_0.9.9b8 would the b9 version work on my newer 3GS model or should I wait for the real deal?

I’m writing you this after several failed attempts to jailbreak ios 5.0.1. My iphone 4 is LOCKED now.
Before all of this, I had a jailbroken ios 5.0 (with preserved baseband of ios 4) with gevey sim working fine for a few days until Cydia crashed and would not open (along with cydia related apps and safari browser). So I thought it turned semi-tethered somehow and i needed to jailbreak it to tethered. I downloaded latest itunes 10.5.2.11, the latest version of sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 and ios 5.0 ipsw. I made a custom firmware through sn0wbreeze and put my phone in dfu mode and tried to jailbreak it but i got an error 3194 and it returned to the same state as before (i.e. ios 5.0 unlocked with gevey sim with baseband ). I tried everything but it did not work.
A friend recommended me to jailbreak ios 5.0.1 through same procedure. Before the attempt I luckily downloaded ifaith 1.4.1 and dumped the shsh blobs. After that i tried to jailbreak ios 5.0.1 and itunes successfully installed it BUT It’s LOCKED now because gevey sim is not supported.
Then i made a custom firmware ios 5.0 with shsh blobs using ifaith and tried to downgrade it to 5.0 but i got an error 1604. I tried everything to solve this with every possible solution to 1604 error (I changed pc, my firewire, clean new installation of itunes, changing host file and restarting my PC, etc.) but nothing helped.

Now, i’m completely stuck and have no access to the phone. I need HELP!!!!!!! Please, give me some glad tidings that i would be able to downgrade since i have shsh blobs though iFaith.

i’m having problems with cydia… when i jailbroke my ipad 1 (i did everything in the guide except for semi-tether because of this problem) and I got cydia. When I open it and it starts to download the packages it crashes after it finishes downloading. If I cancel it, I can’t search or add sources and it’ll crash. Please help.

Hi all, I could do with some help. I have always had a jailbroken iPhone and recently updated my iPhone4 to 5.0.1 so I have a tethered jailbroken phone. The problem I am having is that when I try to download a purchased app from the app store it says ‘waiting’ for a long time and then says that it cannot connect to iTunes. I have added Appsync to Cydia but that is still not working, if anyone has any ideas that would be amazing.

Yes. You just restore your phone via iTunes to factory settings and then install the new jailbreak.

once you reboot into semitether, you boot tethered, you don’t jailbreak it again

Try to uninstall the itunes and reinstall it. if it’s still doesn’t work then. Try to use different computer. It same thing happen to me and gave me error 21 then 1600 then 1601 then 1602. after all that i searched the net and found out if i use the different computer it will work and it did work for me

Yes, had to use a newer version of redsn0w, redsn0w_win_0.9.10b1 and the ispw I used was, iPhone2,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw Had to try it a few times because the phone kept going into the Restore mode Vs. the DFU mode. Also check your iPhone, is it newer or older bootrom. My 4th and 5th digits of serial number were 44.

I didn’t need to do any thing else, redsn0w_win_0.9.10b1 gave me an un-tethered jailbreak, (I think they are up to 10b3 version now). I saw ‘corona’ mentioned in other atricles, just use redsn0w. There are other ways of jailbreaking so don’t get confused by reading about other methods.

i updated my 4th gen ipod to 5.0.1 and jailbroke it with redsnow and i got cydia fine, but my safir wont work it comes up as a blank whitte screen and closes after a min or two, also when i open any folder it slides up and the only way to get out of it is to hit the sleep button, alot of other lil problems and crashes what do i do?

for the last 24 hours I was trying to figure out why the update wasn’t working with my T-Mobile sim card. I was able to finally get it all done. I have a 3GS with a firmware 06.15.00. Here is what I did: 1) Downloaded IOS 5.0.1 and redsn0w 0.9.10b3. 2) updated my phone with iTunes. 3) On redsn0w I clicked on jailbreak (I lost all my info about 20 hours ago so I said what the hell) I followed the instructions and when it asks what I want to download I checked Cydia and iPad baseband (my phone was made before the 35th week deadline so I was able to check that box). 4) After your phone does all the magic go back to redsn0w, click “Extras” then “Just Boot” follow the steps and let it do the magic again and after the phone restarts your t-mobile carrier should show up. 5) Make sure your 3G is off and ultrasn0w is installed from Cydia. (Do note that after many attempts with “Custom IPSW” it never worked for me and I was getting the error 1600, 1601, 1603, 1604. And by many I mean about 10 times. So I gave up on Custom IPSW and just started from beginning and did the jailbreak like it was never jailbroken before.) I am now on the new IOS 5.0.1 with T-Mobile and already made some calls to make sure it worked. I hope this will help some of you who are still having problems.

It should be under, My Documents, on the left top corner you will see Downloads, click that and then hit “Ctrl+F” and type “ipsw”. hope this helps
