you can run it as long as your iPhone UDID is activated with a developer account, there are places on the internet that provide UDID activation services

It’s a GM build, that means it should be the exact same build released to the public on the 12th.

Therefore it should not have any developer account checking built in.

In all likelyhood, no. The GM is the final build that will be released on the 12th baring and major faults. Since iOS 2.0 (the first time they seeded betas publicly), there has only been one time in which the GM was not the final build released to the public and it was related to iPad wifi issues. So feel free to install without fear.

Why are the file extensions coded as DMG

All other iOS5 builds have had the extension IPSW

As far as I know DMG is a standard Apple Mac extension not a iOS one. Usually the iTunes Beta is coded DMG

2: Extract the IPSW from the DMG file
3: Open iTunes 10.5 Beta
4: Shift Click on Restore
5: Find the location of the file you extracted

And that is really all you have to do.

inside the .DMG is the .IPSW.

It’s just packed as DMG. This is a kind of image like ISO if you know. Just unpack that image. The file inside is still an IPSW.

okay i have a stock CDMA iPhone 4, never been jailbroken, currently running iOS 4. I just download a a beta iTunes listed above? as well as the CDMA build? Then install the beta and restore from the iOS 5 gm i just downloaded? HEELLPPP

To install the GM for an iPhone 4 CDMA download :
-iTunes beta 7, 8 or 9 ( all works )
-iOS 5 GM for iPhone 4 (CDMA)

Then plug you’re iPhone on the iTunes version you’ve just download, make a back up
Press alt + restore and look for the iOS 5 GM for iPhone 4 (CDMA) in your download ( it’s in a dmg, extract it you’ll have something like that “iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw” not exactly the same because I’ve a GSM iPhone ( built is the same 9A334 )

So I’ve downloaded both iOS 5 GM and iTunes 10.5b9, installed iTunes, than backed up my iPhone 4.3.5 and then tried a restore from the ipsw iOS5 GM.

After installing the iOS5 my iTunes alerted me that it was restoring my iPhone to Factory settings and than restored using my last backup. Now I still have iOS 4.3.5…

Got to the reminder you created. Click on it to see its details/options. Where it says “remind me” there is a never to the right. Click on never. Your location option should be the second option.

Was your phone unlocked or locked to your carrier?

Mine was locked to ATT, and I have an ATT SIM

Here is the correct update procedure:

1. Download the correct file. If you have a sim pick the GSM one, if no sim pick CDMA.
2. Update to at least Itunes 10.5 beta 7. Restart your computer after it is done updating.
3. Perform a backup (sync) of your phone (takes about 2-3 minutes in iTunes depending on the data on your phone)
4. Extract the DMG file and put the extracted file somewhere you can easily find it.
5. Hold shift+click Restore and it will ask you to find the file you extracted. This completely wipes the phone.
7. Then after it applies your backup and starts loading in your apps, photos, music, books and other data just like you had it before. You won’t lose any data at all it just takes a bit longer than doing an update does.

Justin … I got around this by launching redsn0w and doing the following (note that I am jailbroken):

1. choose boot into DFU mode, going through the steps to get in in the proper mode
2. launch iTunes, you’ll get a message that you can only restore
3. Did the option+restore (Mac), browsed for the IOS5 ipsw file

From there the restore worked like a champ, when it came back up, I was able to choose my last backup point from earlier this evening and all my stuff is there.

i still cant get it to work i restarted my computer i have an ipod 4g 4.3.3 jb ??? i get a error msg 3194

Worked fine for me on my iPhone 4 GSM (french carrier SFR)
1-Restore iPhone with itunes 1.4 (don’t try to “update”, it won’t work and will give you an error)
2-When restore is finish, itunes will tell you that you need itunes 10.5
3-Download iTunes 10.5 beta 7/8 or 9 and install

At this point, you can either activate your phone over wifi or with cable (I’m guessing you’re still in front of your mac/pc so i recommend cable)

4-Once pluged in, your iPhone will sync from backup (if you made one of course)
5-Wait for sync to be over (or just go ahead and play with iOS 5 while it finishes ^^)
6-Aaaannndd…. You’re done

Everything is working fine for me: text, 3G, calls, notifications etc…

Config: iPhone 4 GSM, iTunes 1.4 (to restore) and now iTunes 1.5 beta 7 (will update to beta 9 soon), Mac OSX Lion.

Terror I have a iPhone 4 GSM and have followed all your instructions to the letter.
I get to the point I am supposed to hit shift+click to select the extracted file, however instead of letting me choose, it wants to make me re download the current version of iOS4 (which is already on the phone). Has anyone seen this or know how to get around it? Seems I am very close but just having issues selecting the right file.

you are getting the error because you’re not using the required version of iTunes, not because the UUID is not provisioned.

If you have a Win PC use PowerISO.

Siri is only for the 4s unfortunately, similar to voice recognization on the 3GS which the 3G did not support. I cannot comment on the notification though.

I just got back from the apple store and they even tried to replace it but we get the same error (they had to do some sort of data transfer for the unlock to stay)! its something to do with apple’s end. It seems like they are blocking activation, I’m not sure how to fix this.

I just upgraded to IOS5 on my iphone and ipad. I am not a beta tester and my UDID was not registered anywhere. Everything went fine. I was a beta tester for IOS 4, one thing that I learned is the GM is always golden and if you have a jailbroken/unlocked phone. You can upgrade, but you have to set up your phone as a new device. If you do not, after the upgrade, itunes will try to restore the backup copy of a unlocked/jailbroken phone on a regular phone. This will brick your phone.

If you are jailbroken/unlocked it is imperative that you setup as a new phone and then sync everything back to it.

It’s still in beta. It’s only available for iPhone4S “for now”. Maybe on final version it will be available on iPhone4. I don’t see any problem not putting it to iPhone4 or iPad2 because it share the same hardware as iPad2.

Hey Everyone – I got mine to work just fine Here is what I did – (very simple). I am using a mac running snow leopard and an iPhone running 4.3.4.
1. I downloaded itunes 10.5 beta 9 from this post.
2. Updated my old itunes to version 10.5b132
3. I downloaded the iOS5 AT&T version from this post
4. once downloaded to my “downloads” folder, i connected my iphone to itunes
5. backed up my iphone
6. then i “option + clicked” on “restore” and selected my ipsw file i just downloaded.
7. it installed and restored my iphone perfectly and now i’m running ios5!

the post said you need itunes beta 7. and you did it with beta 9. should i try with beta 9?

Here is the correct update procedure:

1. Download the correct file. If you have a sim pick the GSM one, if no sim pick CDMA.
2. Update to at least Itunes 10.5 beta 7. Restart your computer after it is done updating.
3. Perform a backup (sync) of your phone (takes about 2-3 minutes in iTunes depending on the data on your phone)
4. Extract the DMG file and put the extracted file somewhere you can easily find it.
5. Hold shift+click Restore and it will ask you to find the file you extracted. This completely wipes the phone.
7. Then after it applies your backup and starts loading in your apps, photos, music, books and other data just like you had it before. You won’t lose any data at all it just takes a bit longer than doing an update does.

I agree it took a hell of a long time over a normal update, but it all works!

Anyone that has been successful updating to iOS 5 on (CDMA) please list instructions because i can’t get around the errors.

Here is the guide to download iOS 5 GM on the PC (For Windows 7, It probably works for others.. but I have windows 7)
And before you say anything/ask..
YOU WILL NOT NEED A REG. UDID TO DO THIS.
I TRIED THIS, IT WORKED ON MY IPAD 2 WITH WIFI ON MY WINDOWS 7 PC, I AM NOT A DEVELOPER!!
THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU!!
1) Download the iTunes 10.5 Beta 7 in the link provided above.
2) Download your corresponding ISPW for your iDevice, In my case I have an iPad 2 Wifi, So I downloaded the Wifi only version.
3) After downloading, Download a ISO manager, Like the program “Power ISO”. Just download it and install it. You might have to restart after that, But hey, it’s worth the time for the iOS 5!
4) Open the ISO with Power ISO, And extract the ISPW inside to the desktop.. (And if it asks to register, Just say no, And go with the free version.)
5) Open up iTunes (Beta 7, 10.5) And put your iDevice in DFU Mode.
6) To put your device in DFU mode, Do these steps:
Hold the power button for 3 seconds, and hold the home button with it, for about 10 seconds.
Then release the power button, Continue to hold the home button, And you will hear a beep/sound on your PC, Indicating it’s on DFU mode and connected.
7) Finally, Hold Shift + Click “Restore” on iTunes, And browse to your desktop (Or wherever you put the IPSW after you extracted..) and click okay! It should be downloading, Just sit back, Relax.

Bad things happened?
Try these steps..

A: If you downgrade, And on your iDevice is on the loading bar, And stuck on it, Then try switch Apple Cords/Power cords for your iDevice, And delete and re download iTunes for your correct Bit.
^ This happened to me, And I fixed it using that method!

B: If you can’t upgrade it, Well, You just can’t! You have to back up, Then restore your iDevice.

Huh… has anyone else gotten “The iPhone cannot be updated because the firmware file was corrupt?” error? I’ve downloaded a couple of the GM firmwares from multiple sites, and the error is still coming up. I have iTunes 10.5 b9 installed and a newly restored iPhone 3gs.

I was having problems installing iOS 5 GM on my mac even though I downloaded the correct iTunes and everything. I decided to try installing it using Windows and voila! It worked flawlessly. So I guess if you can try windows (iTunes 10.5 beta 7) to install the GM.

Installed iOS 5 GM on my iPhone 4 on the 3 Network in the UK and no problems! Used My Macbook Pro with iTunes 10.5 Beta . Will do my iPad 2 3G later… Note UK uses GSM.

I am trying to help a friend on the phone.

Took him through the same steps I took when updating to ios 5 gm, but there is a small problem.

I had an iCould backup and fully restored all my settings and apps etc just fine.

My friend backup his phone and restored from the ios 5 gm .ipsw. When going through the setup process on the phone and selecting the restore from itunes back option, it tells him to connect to itunes, but when he does it doesn’t actually do anything.

Is there anyway to restore all the settings from the backup he has created before restoring to GM?

So I have iOS 5 GM up and running on my phone. Everything is working great, but when I go to Settings > General > Software Update, I get an error that says “Unable to Check for Updates, An error occurred while checking for a software update.” On beta 7 I would get a nice message that said something like “software is up to date.” Is anyone else getting the “Unable to Check for Updates” error with the iOS 5 GM?

Anyone? He is using windows by the way. So when he selects to restore from itunes, it tells him to connect the phone to itunes and when he does itunes back it up as usual, but the the connect to itunes message remains on the iphone’s screen.

CDMA is for the Verizon iPhone, if your using yours on AT&T Use the GSM build.

AT&T = GSM. Verizon = CDMA

Lots of people making similar mistakes: make sure you RESTORE to new ipsw, not UPGRADE. Otherwise you will get the err:3002

Siri at the moment is only for the iPhone 4S.. However, jailbreakers are trying to get it to work with the iPhone 4.

Hello, I jailbreaked but Cydia is not working, i had no errors jailbreaking, and my Iphone4 GSM with IOS5 GM is rebooting normally… have you had the same issue?

Just done this on Windows 7 and it’s working great, if you get the error 1603 when restoring then close iTunes and unplug your phone or pad then go to Start> control panel> administrative tools > services > apple mobile devices press stop the service the press restart the service and try again that’s what worked for me.

Just found out today Siri is iPhone 4s only that was in the small print of an e-mail I got from apple advertising the new phone.

Having an issue with my iPad 2, im able to update to os 5, but when it comes to loading up my backup, it doesn’t load anything but all the apps that I had installed before… With none of my info in them. If u know what I mean. Tried restoring multiple times and kicked it into DFU mode and also tried different backup files but all does the same thing. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

all worked well. can confirm it works on iPhone 4, restored everything, got iCloud setup, can make calls, text everything is normal.

got it working with iTunes Windows 64 Bit. At first, iTunes did not run when I double clicked it. I tried repairing the install and that didn’t work. After several restarts, I eventually uninstalled iTunes and then reinstalled and it works straight away.

Just a warning… Not sure what I did wrong, but I have Win 7 x64. Had ios 4.3.3 JB with iphone 4. Tried to restore to stock firmware first, then do the ios 5. Was using itunes beta 7 for 64. It got through 3/4 of restore, then gave error code (1). Phone got stuck in a Recovery loop. Now I’m bald trying to fix it. Finally got it to stock ios 4.3.5

I went through hell trying to get it to work. first I got the 3194 error, used tiny umbrella and started getting the 1600-1601 error, then I used redsnow… then back to sn0wbreeze then back to redsnow and it finally worked… with a lot of uninstalling and reinstalling of iTunes also. Once I got the 3194 error gone everything came into place!

Just put it on my Verizon iPhone 4 without any hiccup or issue to speak of using Windows

-Download itunes 10.5 beta 7, the proper version of ios 5 for your iphoe/ipad, and transmac (transmac is a program i used to extract the ios 5 ipsw file from the dmg file). On a quick sidenote, if you have any questions about transmac, the ispw, dmg file, or how to do/use any of the following, then you SHOULD NOT be doing this in the first place. So for the sake of everyone here. Stop asking questions. This process is EXTREMELY simple if you know what you are doing.

-Once all that is downloaded. Install transmac and use it to extract the ISPW file.
-Install itunes 10.5 and restart your computer.
-Once restarted open itunes and plug in your iphone/ipad and perform a backup.
-Place your iphone/ipad in DFU mode. Once again, if you don’t know what DFU mode is then you probably should not be doing this.
-Shift+Click on RESTORE (Do NOT click on update. Many of you are having problems because you are trying to update your phone, YOU MUST RESTORE IT)
-Find where you extracted your iOS 5 GM ISPW file to and select it
-Let iTunes do it thing. BE PATIENT
-Once finished your phone/ipad will be running iOS 5 GM
-At this point itunes will prompt you to either set up your phone as a new phone or restore it using a backup. Most of you will be like me and want to restore it from a backup
-Once restored from the backup. Follow the iphones on screen instructions asking you to set up some of the new features in iOS 5.
-Once your done with that you phone will be setup and all your settings, contacts, photos, music, etc. should be restored. However, you apps likely will not be (mine were not)
-DO NOT PANIC. Simply go to the apps tab in itunes and sync your apps back to your phone. All of your app data should be preserved.
-Once you done doing that. VOILA. You phone is back to the way it was and is now running iOS 5 GM

Keep in mind not all features will be there or will work. It is not the final release. No SIRI will not be there. It is an iphone 4s exclusive. The camera button on the lockscreen is missing. Newstand is not fully functional yet. The new CARDS app and the FAMILLY AND FRIENDS app are not included in the firmware. They will be apps available to download in the app store at the time of the official release of iOS 5, much like ibooks was.

Oh yea. One last thing. When you are syncing your apps back to your device do not be surprised or panic when some of them dont sync back properly. You will see a message saying somewhere along the lines of “xxxx app failed to sync”. It happened to a couple of mine. Im not 100% sure why, but im guessing its likely because they arent yet compatible with iOS 5.

For those of you with questions after reading this. Don’t bother trying this. Your wasting your time and you are potentially going to harm your device. It is going to be released officially in less than a week and you can VERY VERY VERY EASILY update then.

The new voice feature, SIRI, is only on the iPhone 4S. It is not compatible with any other iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Sorry to disappoint.

Try clicking on the file you downloaded and it should extract a .ipsw then you find the .ipsw via the restore button on iTunes for Mac.

Hey, I need help My laptop crashed and I had to have it reformatted. I lost my itunes where all my files in my ipad is backed up. I downloaded itunes again and authorized it and had all my purchased items synced. The problems is i can no longer sync the photos and songs I had synced from my original itunes. I want to update my ipad to ios5, but Im afraid I might lose the unsynced photos and music in my ipad. Will I lose the files? If yes, Is there anyway I can prevent it?

If all else fails try this:

First, connect the iPhone to a computer (Mac or PC) running iTunes 10.5, using the cable. Turn the phone off if you can (I couldn’t but this trick worked anyway). Hold the power button on the top and the home button on the front down at the same time for precisely 10 seconds — no kidding, time it with a watch. At 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding the home button down until the computer sees the iPhone.

Now you should be able to do a normal restore. It’s a big update, so expect it to take a good, long time.

DFU means Device Firmware Update. If a restore using Recovery Mode doesn’t work you will want to use DFU Mode as a last resort. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore

Was there any resolution with this issue?  I’m having the same problem.  Just got back from AT&T.  They gave me a new SIM card, but I’m still getting the same error message.

I’m having a problem I’m using a iPhone 4 on 4.3.3 and unlocked using gevey sim on baseband 4.10.1 (i think) I have downloaded iOS 5 and redsnow beta 5 to make a custom ipsw and put my phone in dfu mode and selected the No BB custom firmware but I keep getting a error saying my phone isn’t eligible for requested build? Anyone know what I’m doing wrong? Plz help

You have to add some script to the end of your host file. go to youtube and type “error 3194″ and they explain it very clearly.

I have disabled Kaspersky Anti Virus before I have started the download. This solved the problem and IOS 5 was installed successfully.

Hey, i am having alot of trouble jailbreaking my iphone 4s. Firstly, i have probaly downloaded the ios 5.1 update 4 times now, i want to kow firstly how can dl the update and save it on my flash and when i restore my iphone can i press shift+restore and select the update from my flash? cause it doesnt work, and its is the right update file (iPhone4,1_5.1_9B179_Restore). Secondly ihave trouble going in to dfu mode. when i dont do it right(which is everytime) the iphone wants me to restore it again hence the 4 time update dl. Please any1 help?
