Jailbreak iOS 5.1 iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (A4 Devices) Using Redsn0w 0.9.10b6

It was only yesterday when Apple released iOS 5.1 for all devices including the newly released “New” iPad announced in yesterday’s event. iOS 5.1 brings some new features and minor bug fixes to all iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.

The iPhone Dev Team and BigBoss have warned jailbreakers from upgrading to iOS 5.1 because you’ll lose the untethered jailbreak made on iOS 5.0.1. However, some users updated to iOS 5.1. That’s why the iPhone Dev Team pushed a new Redsn0w update in order to allow tethered jailbreak for A4 devices using Redsn0w 0.9.10b6. Moreover, the BigBoss updated “SemiTether” jailbreak tweak to work on iOS 5.1.

Important Notes

  • This jailbreak is tethered jailbreak which means you’ll need to connect your device to computer everytime it reboots. You’ll need to do a tethered boot.
  • If you rely on unlock, don’t follow this guide. We’ll post a guide shortly on how to preserve baseband and keep the unlock.
  • The jailbreak is not meant for A5 devices, i.e. iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S.

Jailbreak iOS 5.1 Using Redsn0w 0.9.10b6

STEP 1: Download iTunes 10.6 from here, iOS 5.1 from here and Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 [/].

STEP 2: Now open iTunes, back up your device and restore using the downloaded iOS 5.1.

STEP 3: Open Redsn0w, select “Jailbreak”  then “Install Cydia” and follow on-screen instructions to put your device into DFU mode.

STEP 4: Finally do a tethered boot, launch Redsn0w, select “Extras” then”Just Boot” and put your device in DFU mode to get it rebooted and working.

STEP 5: This step is optional. Now, you can get “SemiTether” tweak from Cydia, you can read everything about Semi Untethered jailbreak here. You can get the tweak for free from BigBoss repo: http://thebigboss.org/semitether.

    it means u have to re-connect the device to the PC and use a software after each reboot.

    You do not need to plug your device to your PC to reboot, but some apps won’t work with semitethered jailbreak. To get these apps working again, you need to do a tethered boot. That’s why it is called semitethered. It’s almost untethered but with some weird bugs…

    hello i have install ios 5.1 on my iphone 4 and i have itunes 10.6 and lates redsnow to tethered jailbreak my iphone but when i try to do it it says certain operations like de a5 jailbreak are disabled due to incomplete libriries it says that i should install lates itunes and i have it pleaaase help also when i hit jailbreak it doesnt show me the window where i chek install cydia it goes straight to getting into DFU and i follow the steps and nothing happens it says that my iphone isnt in DFU and it actually is cuz itunes pops up and tells me so… PLEASEEE HELP

    People r to impaitient. These guys that do these jailbreaks for us r nice enough for giving us this great software. Just b paitient. They will come through again. 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak is still great. Why upgrade to 5.1 until u can do it with an untethered jailbreak. Apple is sucking all of u into thinking u need these updates. In reality most of the things apple offers on an iOS update is usually available on cydia.

    Chill guys… The only thing 5.1 is going to bring to the table that will really make any difference is, allegedly, improved battery life and an extra 30 megabytes of 3g download on the app store. If you own an A5 device a 4g icon. *roll eyes* No firmware update will ever be worth as much as an untethered JB, especially in these days of multi-processors and bootroms.

    can you pls tell me what to do ASAP. I’ve been out of the Jbing loop for a while now. i updated from 4.2 thinking this would work fine. :S
    now i’m not jailbroken for the first time in ages!

    Read the important notes above, it says that this jailbreak is not meant for a5 devices (iPhone 4s, iPad2 & iPad 3).
    Its only for a4 devices like the iPhone 4

    True, and if u want to download any app in the appstore thats 20mb or more, download (3g restrictor 5) tweak from cydia.

    Restart your computer in safe mode and run the program again would solve this problem.

    btw, if you try to “just boot” in safe mode , and you face this problem again, just restart your computer in normal mode(means you don’t have to enter safe mode), and run “just boot’. It will work.

    Hope this can help you. It worked for me.
